DVD REVIEWS / JANUARY 2015

We love Melissa McCarthy! We fell in love with her in the series Mike & Molly, and in her new movie Tammy, she’s just as endearing. Tammy, a fast food waitress, is having the worst day imaginable. And if it’s possible, the day just keeps getting worse. From crashing her car, to losing her job AND finding her hubby cavorting with the neighbour all in one day, it all becomes to much for Tammy and she decides it’s time to hit the road. So she does what any self respecting woman does and goes on a road trip with her grandmother Pearl, played to perfection by Susan Sarandon. A road trip with a nagging grandma? Sounds less than fun right? But it turns out that it may be just what Tammy needs.

Jersey Boys is my all time favourite musical. Ive seen it at least 6 times on stage and could see it another 100 times and never get tired of it. So when i heard that Clint Eastwood was taking my beloved musical from the stage to the big screen I was a little bit nervous. Could he fill the screen with as much magic as a live audience brings? Truth is he could, and he did. Jersey Boys tells the story of one of America’s greatest singing groups - Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.  In the 1960s, four young men from New Jersey -- Frankie Valli (John Lloyd Young), Bob Gaudio (Erich Bergen), Nick Massi (Michael Lomenda) and Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza) -- have the magic sound that propels them from singing under streetlights to singing in spotlights. With songs like "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like a Man," the quartet finds itself at the top of the charts. However, personal and professional problems threaten to tear the group apart. John Lloyd steals the show, having played Frankie on Broadway for so many years and earning some Tony Awards. The voices are crystal clear and the music is as unforgettable as always! It’s one of the best screen adaptations of a musical that I’ve ever seen.
