Rave Review's Fitness expert Sean Pettit

So for our first issue we asked Sean the number one question on most girls minds. Just how do you get a boast worthy tummy for that red hot event on your calendar, and is it even possible to look svelte in just ONE WEEK? You heard us right, just 7 Days. Well Sean has answered our question, and boy oh boy has he delivered.

SEAN PETTIT'S TIPS FOR THAT ELUSIVE FLAT TUMMY...

Janet Jackson. Rene Zelweiger. Jessica Alba. All these women walk the red carpet looking like goddesses with bodies to die for. While these bodies have been worked on and honed for months before their big event, there are still some tricks and tip that you can use up to a ONE WEEK before to help you emulate your starlet of choice.

Most people think that if they do a million sit ups or crunches that this will solve all of their problems, in essence that will only get you so far. When looking at our bodies you need to make sure that you look at it as a whole and a flat stomach starts from within.

  • The week before, make sure that you cut down your highly processed white carbs, such as bread and pastas and potatoes (YES GIRLS, BASICALLY ALL THE STUFF THAT TASTES GOOD, BUT AIN'T SO GOOD FOR US). These foods are the enemy and lead to yucky bloating. Sis.
  • Increase the amount of good organic fruit and veg and high fiber food. The fresher the better.

Now that you know what you can and cannot munch on, we can start focusing on what you can do physically to set the tone. Most people think that they will get a Britney Spears stomach (OK, we haven't seen her abs in years so  maybe a bad example, let's go more with Kim Kardashian on this one) by doing the 900 daily crunches that she claims to do, however, these exercises are working the wrong muscles. The muscles that you should be focusing on are deeper internal core muscles. These muscles are the ones that actually pull your stomach in and flatten in. You know which one's we're talking about? The kind that you pulled in every time your mother told you to sit up straight...

Core stabilizing exercises such as a plank or a banana roll will help to activate the muscles and give them a great workout.  Doing 4 pilates classes the week before would be far more effective than doing the floor based ab classes that a lot of gyms offer.

While you’re reading this, what is your posture like? Are you slouched on the couch or bent over your computer at work? A lot of people who are conscious about their midriff tend to hunch over a bit to try and make themselves look smaller, what this does in essence is make the whole situation worse. Try it yourself. Try putting your shoulders back and correcting your posture. What happens to your stomach? It flattens and the dreaded Muffin Top decreases.

I often get asked in my line of work what I think of supportive under garments, such as the very attractive miracle nickers suck as Spanx. As a close friend of mine, who has spent far too much money on these thing, points out, the fat has to go somewhere. You can choose between a roll over the top or legs like the oros man. As I told her before we burnt them, a woman is more attractive, when she lets her confidence shine through than when she tries to trap it under restrictive lycra.

Moral of the story? Shoulders back, head up and work it ladies!
