WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A BALL..

Gals it's time to dust off those show stopping ballgowns and polish up your favourite pair of Jimmy Choo's because one of the biggest night's on the South African social calendar is upon us.

The Grand Viennese Ball of 2011, in association with The City of Vienna, Gold Reef City Casino and Lufthansa Airlines, will be held this year in spectacular fashion on Saturday 14th May in the ballroom of the Sandton Sun Hotel in Johannesburg. We are always looking for a reason to dress up and feel like Cinderella, and this event is one we will not be missing out on.

Gorgeous Debutantes of the German International School will be opening up this year's Viennese Ball. The Ball, which will be celebrating it's 30th Anniversary in South Africa, had its first event way back in 1981. What a sensational milestone. Entertainment will be provided by Opera singers flown in all the way from Vienna as well as the great Ball Orchestra conducted by Richard Cock . The South African Ballet, and traditional "Schrammel Musicians" will also be on hand to liven things up.

Not only will this fantasy world be taking place in the ballroom, but doors opening onto other themed rooms will spellbound guests.  An Oyster Bar, Casino Room and Piano Bar is just some of what you can expect to experience, and at the stroke of midnight the well known Goulash & Wuerstel (Hot Dog) Bar and Cake Buffet will be served together with a surprise show and raffle draw (Trip for 2 people to Vienna), so ladies don't go wandering away or losing any glass slipper just yet.

Part of the proceeds from this fantastic event will go to the Masibambane College in Orange Farm. This school, founded in 1996, was funded by the City of Vienna . It educates over 850 students  and consists an outreach programme  that reaches 20 000 people in the community.

Rave Review was honoured to be given a sneak preview to this event at the Chef's Table held in the kitchen of the Sandton Sun Hotel. We had a taste of what guests will be tucking into on the night, and let's just say, it really is food for thought. A stunningly decorated table greeted us on our arrival, we were wined and dined and learnt about the event as well as the customs which encompass it. At the end of the day we were given a 24ct gold plated art deco onyx pendant valued at R1500 - sponsored by the City of Vienna. Each lady who attends the ball in May will leave with one too. Just fabulous.

Beautiful Ballgowns, 5 star cuisine, and an orchestra who will have you waltzing the night away. We're giddy thinking about it and who knows? This Cinderella may just find her prince that night, and if that's the case we'll be putting in a call to our Fairy Godmother to hold off on our carriage turning back into a pumpkin, because we have a feeling this is one ball that will go on long past midnight.

For our first course we feasted on three different trouts and shrimp served

with a fennel and apple mousse.

Our main course was super yummy! A mustard and pepper fillet of beef

topped with an oxtail and mushroom ragout served with broccoli mash.

Dessert sent from heaven...Lindt chocolate with a hazelnut mousse, blueberry cheesecake and a berry sorbet.
