I happen to love the cold Winter months. When else can you wear gorgeous knits, amazing layers and lovely trenches. The icy weather may make some of you cringe, but I can’t think of a better setting for a movie on the couch with the man of your dreams; when else can you constantly delight in the splurge of Milo and a tot of Amarula, never mind the fact that a hot chocolate fondue party is the perfect way to catch up with your besties on a girls night while sitting in front of a roaring fire or oodles of heaters. Warming up on Winter proves to be troublesome for people, if only they knew of our latest find, it’s gotten women all over the world talking, and is proving to be one of the biggest and best-selling novel trilogies of all time. We’re talking Christian Grey ladies, and dare we say it, Fifty Shades of Grey.
Ladies we all remember paging through magazines over the last 10 years, and in every single one of them, advertisements for erotic romance novel’s were quite popular. We’d always look, some of us bought, but for the other’s you would always wonder what in the world those books were like. Well, a new writer has risen, with a story so thrilling, and at times shocking. E L James has gone into the psyche of every woman, and delivered what she believes, and we must admit, what we believe, women want to read. You might blush while reading, you may even think how am I going to continue reading this, but at the end of the day you turn every single page with baited breath and incredible expectations – let’s just say this book does not fall short and only delivers.
The story follows Anastasia Steele, a 22 year old college senior who fate throws together with Christian Grey, a wealthy and successful man. Being instantly attracted to him, and perhaps a bit intimidated, she does her work and leaves thinking she’ll never see him again. But she’s wrong. He just keep’s popping up and what transpires next is a very heavy, sexually fuelled story. This is really intense reading, and extremely graphic. It hasn’t been dubbed ‘mommy porn’ for nothing. You come to care deeply about these characters, and with all the unexpected twists and turns that you SO don’t see coming, we can see why these books are going to leave a lasting effect in the lives of all women, and perhaps the men reading them too. The second and third book, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed continues on from the first book, throwing you for your loops and definitely making you think!
With Christian Grey elevated to cult status, and the movie right’s already being sold, we will wait with excitement to see how this all plays out on the big screen. If you’re looking for a read that holds your attention and keeps you wanting more, this is the trilogy to do that for you. And with women everywhere getting all fired up and heated about these books, we doubt Eskom will have any problems with load-shedding this winter. Fifty Shades of Grey is the hottest thing to hit Jozi.
